School children celebrate World Wetlands Day at Nature reserves

Malta and Gozo’s schoolchildren are this week visiting the Għadira and Is-Simar nature reserves for a special educational tour to celebrate World Wetlands Day, an activity organised by BirdLife Malta and Bank of Valletta’s education programme Dinja Wahda.

The Sunday Times article titled ‘Limited Spring Hunting’ of last Sunday was misleading the public by wrongly claiming that ‘The European Commission is to permit Malta to reopen a limited hunting season this spring’, BirdLife Malta stated today.

Environmental NGOs unite against spring hunting

Eight Environmental NGOs today joined forces to counter the hunting lobby’s recent demand made to the Prime Minister to reopen spring hunting, warning Dr Lawrence Gonzi not to drag Malta into another case at the European Court of Justice.

Condemning the witness instead of the criminal

Time and again, the hunting lobby in Malta seems comfortable accusing the witness reporting the crimes, instead of the criminals committing them. Henry Fenech Azzopardi (January 8) goes as far as condemning BirdLife for doing its job. He questions the veracity of the evidence on widespread illegal hunting provided by BirdLife, yet does not provide any evidence to back up his claims that BirdLife never comes up with a solution to curb illegal hunting.

International action to stop illegal hunting in Malta

BirdLife International Partners in Europe today launched an international campaign aimed at Maltese Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi demanding the proper enforcement of the EU Birds Directive, which has been largely ignored since EU membership.
